SPEAKER_01

Well, hello, I'm Dr. Julia Royston at BK Royston Publishing, Royal Media and Publishing, and the Book Business Boss Consulting, helping you get your message to the masses, turn your words into wealth, and be a book business boss. Well, you're listening to the book business boss show, where I'm seeking to pour 18 plus years of good, bad, and ugly information into your um mind and heart today. And so it's my portfolio, it's my um profile, it is my um looking back on my life and business and pouring and transforming and transferring that knowledge, hopefully, into your hands. So this season, season five, that we're in right now, we're talking about turning your book into a business. And so I'm at the part now where we talked about last week the type of business. Uh, what type of business do you want to be? What type of business are you writing? Now I have to tell you uh over the last few weeks of meeting with clients, and it doesn't matter when you're listening to this, um, it'll continue to happen because you know, God is letting me know it continues to happen. So we when I'm meeting with clients, I'm um those that seek to have businesses are following early on into these three roles or categories. They're either coaches, therapists, and speakers. Um, they have written books, they may not be coaches, they may not be speakers, they may not be therapists now, but based on, especially faith-based people, based on the books that they have presented to me and said, this is what God said for me to do, so I'm doing it. And I'm like, okay, God, you brought me um another book again. So uh you must intend for me to prepare them. I'm not really warning, I'm I'm not trying to scare anybody, but um, prepare people that when they write these types of books, this is just step one. God has something else in store for them. I'm not a prophet, don't even go down that road, but I just do what he says. So um, you know, usually when if it's a memoir book or if they're already a therapist and they need a book with it, then I don't have to go so hard. But if they come and I say, Do you preach? No. Do you speak? No. Are you a coach? No. Are you a therapist? No. Okay, well, let me just tell you, you're gonna be doing something next. God is trusting you to obey him to do the first step, and then he's gonna give you the rest. That's just it, bottom line. So um I thought at first I would go through each uh bit type of business individually, which I've kind of already talked about them generally and go through them, but these three I'm gonna lump together coaches, therapists, and speakers. Now, your business model and the way you do business is gonna be totally different. And I've advised you, and this is disclaimer again, uh, as far as financial, and now you need a financial expert. I'm not a CPA for anything legal. You need to go get a lawyer. Um, this is just an idea based on experience. These are this is information that I've learned over time. So um, you know, Julia Roxon said it, so it's law. No, it's not. Every state is different, every business different, and every business owner is different. So um, you know, the Bible says, testify of what you've seen and heard. So I'm testifying of what I've seen, heard, done, had done to me. Don't want to ever happen again. I'm joking. But uh that's that's primarily what this is about. Um, this is this is helping me as well as helping my future, and it's also helping me remember as well. So uh I'll be completely honest. Um, I'm part of me is ashamed to say, but I'm like, you've been doing this 18 years. Why are you embarrassed about it? God brought the business to you. You didn't go shaping, uh, you know, chasing the business and and shaping it yourself. It came to you. The game came to you. You went to God, he kept saying yes, and I kept obeying. So that that's that's my story, and I uh that's my story, and I'm sticking to it. But I I'm I I'm gonna be perfectly honest with you and transparent and say I never did have a business plan. Now, do I recommend that for everybody? No, but I guess too, as I stated early on and before, my dad was an entrepreneur, my family was in business the majority of my life, really all of my life, since I was nine years old. So I've seen the business model. So did I have to write it down on paper? Probably not, because I worked it, I did it, I lived it every single solitary day, me and my sisters. So therefore, I, you know, I I didn't sit down and say a business model because all I did think I was gonna write books myself, and then I had one person that I helped uh publish her book. But I didn't know where we were going. I didn't have any clue. So I can't tell you this is gonna happen and guarantee, I cannot. I can just give you the tools, and as the old saying goes, I can lead the horse to water, but I can't make him drink, and I can't tell you I'm not, I don't walk in the office of a prophet to tell you what the future is gonna look like. But I can tell you the steps that I've taken. So let's let's ask a couple questions. First off, what type of business do you really enjoy working with, visiting? I mean, hopefully you strive to model the businesses that you enjoy that you like. Um, what what is their customer service like? What is their response time like? Do you need immediate gratification? Can you wait two days? Um do you like it when people don't respond to your emails? Do you respond to emails? Do you pick up the phone? Do you text? Are you active on social media? Because a lot of that has to do with how your business is run and what your business is based on you and your personality. And you're not only just your hard work, but do people want to work with you? Just because you're good at something doesn't necessarily mean people want to work with you. And that that's a hard pill to swallow, you know, and in in the time and the and the place and the season that we're in, just because you're good at something doesn't mean your spirit connects with everybody for people to want to do business with you. People do business with people they know, like, and trust. And they may know you, but they don't trust you or like you. And so therefore, it's very difficult to do business with people like that. If you are not able to um make connections with people, it's very, very difficult. Um, and I've said no to people, and even if we work together one time and I went through that process, I don't want to do it again sometimes. And I'm thinking, you need to find somebody else. And so, therefore, you've got to start thinking about what do you think it would take to build that type of business? The business that you decide you like. So hopefully you're taking notes and in the uh in your journal in your quiet time. And then when you start remembering that people are asking more of you and wanting more from you, they're attracted to you. I'm not talking about physically, I'm talking about spiritually, business-wise, let's make a connection. Oh my gosh, I think I really want to work with them because it's it's way more than just how you look. It's it's the spirit within you, it's the your character, your integrity, your reputation plays a little big part of it. So, um, but you got to, you you gotta, you know, have some non-negotiables. You've got to have some, um, it it doesn't matter what you know, you've got to have some hard um resolve in some areas to know exactly what you will and won't do and what what lines you will cross, and no amount of money is gonna do this. So really taking the time to think about that. But if you're a coach, you gotta be willing to like people and you've got to want people to succeed. And sometimes you have to be a little tougher coach. Some coaches I've seen, especially because I'm a sports fanatic, I've seen cross the line doing things that they definitely shouldn't do, putting their hands on people. But you know, having those tough conversations is a part of it. But you gotta understand what your approach is. And then being a therapist, you're licensed, you're certified. If you're a certified therapist, somebody else is monitoring your behavior. Now, business-wise, we can talk about some other things. Products, services, systems, etc. But as a therapist, you know, there are licensings and certifications, there's mentors and stuff that go along with that. So you gotta, you know, there's an alignment, strict alignment that goes with that. Speakers, on the other hand, um, they need to be able to connect with audiences, and I highly suggest that um that you connect with speaker bureaus and anything to help you advance and and train and um work on that so that your people want to have you back to speak again. And sometimes um that will require adjustments to your life, uh, expectations, training, small groups, big groups, all kinds of groups. But um, in essence, you're you're it's gonna have to you're gonna have to put some hustle in, some work in. Now, if you already preach every week to an audience, a church that connects with you and already comes in the building, or even online every week, then you you already have that part down. But creating a uh monetized system or a business that comes out of that is is something else. And we'll talk about product creation uh in a bit in a future episode. But just know this that um it's gonna require a review and evaluation of your life, discipline, and investment. You've got to make time for it. And you know, when I and I've often said it, and I'll say it one more time. When I say investment, most of the time people are talking about how much the money. And and I think sometimes I have had people that have had the money, the money wasn't the issue. It's being and investing in the actual time that it takes, investment in the training that it takes, investing in acquiring the skill set, not only for just speaking on the stage or being a coach or the certification to be a therapist, but investing in your own personal health, your own personal growth so that you come out swinging and are able to be the best that you can be. Understanding what your limits are, understanding what your uh assets and liabilities are. And I'm not talking about property and stocks and bonds. I'm talking about the asset of what you know you do well and the liability of what I don't do well, what what doesn't work out good for me. I'm not good with ABC XYZ. What do I need to pay coaching for? What do I need help with? And we'll talk about building a team later. And if you need a team and what your team should look like versus what my team looks like. But you've got to take some uh time to really analyze what that's gonna look like for your coaching business, for um being a therapist and being a speaker. Now, before I take a break, right here, I want you to know one of the first things that you need to start doing, and you're listening to me, and I appreciate that as well. But in addition to me, I'm a coach and a speaker. I'm not a therapist, but I'm a coach and a speaker. I have friends who are therapists that I can recommend you to, but I'm a coach and a speaker. And what besides following me on uh Book Business Ball show, tuning in, um, following on uh the replays that I have available, you need to follow me on social media, you need to start following other coaches that you admire, other people that you see uh on social media. You need to be um, you know, that if you're really striving to be to build your own business from scratch, you need to immerse yourself in that world. Lawyers who want to be better lawyers hang around with good lawyers. Engineers, doctors, teachers who want to be better teachers, they hang around the best. They find who does the best, who has the best productivity, and that's where they hang out. That's where they eat lunch with, that's who they pick their brain. That's who they may say. Can I buy you dinner? I gotta pick your brain. The whole nine yards. That's the type of investment I'm talking about. I'll take a break right here. I'll be back with more. I'm growing, I'm building, I'm learning, getting ready to soar. Be blessed. And we're back. You're listening to the book business ball show. I'm Dr. Julia Royston. And we're talking about, still talking about turning your book into a business. And we've been talking about the types of businesses, and I want to speak to those today in regards to being coaches, therapists, and speakers. Now, all the other technical issues, you know who to go to, the professionals. But I am speaking from my experience, and I hope that helps you. So after you're thinking about, okay, this is kind of business I want. Um, I want to build uh, you know, what it would actually take to build this type of business. What's my money look like? What'd my life look like? What am I able to discipline myself to be able to do? Some of you may not be therapists and realize I have a call for that. You took a survey, you um, and and I think I'm gonna have to go back to school. And I've been investigating investigating that. Um, I'm willing to make that investment. So that's a part of the investment and discipline that it's gonna take to be able to take it to that next level. So you've written a book now. Oh my goodness, it's taking it a life of its own. And that's good. That means growth, that means learning, that means expansion, that means um, and expansion shouldn't uh scare you so much. Expansion could be just your content, your knowledge, your ability to help other people because that's ultimately the goal. That's the goal of this show, that's the goal of my life, that's the goal of my businesses, my nonprofits, my ministries is to help somebody else. When it's all said and done, I want to be helpful and impactful. If I'm not, then I need to switch gears, go back to school, do something else. Okay, I'll get off that soapbox. But in turning your book into a business, so we're analyzing what kind of business we want, but we also have to look at what kind of book we have. So, you know, you often have to go back to um not only just your why you wrote it, but what did you write? What did you say? And I know a lot of authors like Julia, take it. I don't want to look at this book again. No, boo. You this is a part of who you are, this is a part of your message, this is a part of your intellectual property. This could be a part of wealth building for you. So therefore, you need to know what it says. And um, if the message gains momentum, and then it could be, you know, uh turn into a movement. So get your book out, uh, get the table of contents. If you if you would BK Royce and Publishing, you can just go to your email and open up the PDF, and there it is, because you get your documents back. So analyze your book again. What did you say? What did you talk about? Now, some books I have are designed for um the intro, the beginning, early on. Most of the people I work most, not all, but most of the people authors I work with are usually first timers. Now, I do work with people who have published other places, published with other people, other situations, even other types of publishers. Um publish on their own. But the majority of the things that I write, the things and that my clients need sometime are introduction or the beginning. I talked to some of my other good business friends, and they they do some of the nah I I can do the VIP and and and all of that. I can if you're ready for it, but there's nothing worse than trying to feed uh a three-month-old baby steak. They're not ready for it. They need milk. And so therefore, there's no sense in trying to advance to the next level when you're um doing business with people who still don't post on social media, they still don't respond to text, they still don't respond to email. They, yeah, you get my drift. So, but you have to look at your book and the message that you have and decide. Is it introductory? Is it somewhere in the middle? Like they have some experience, but they got stuck and they need to be moved um a little bit further. You don't have to repeat everything and all the definitions and all the vocabulary from the beginning, but they stuck somewhere in the middle and they need to be pushed to advance or guided to advance. Or it is your message for uh training other people, other coaches, other therapists, other speakers? Is that are you on that level? Are you on the advanced level? And so what were you trying to convey? What was the message of your book? What what are you really trying to is it live a best life, live a better life? Um, um, do better with your money, do better with your health. What was it? Health and wellness? Is it overall life? Were you teaching people how to how to write a book? Were you teaching people how to um uh get rid of anxiety or get off um certain meds? What were you doing? What what was the point? Because that will determine what the problem is, that will determine why people come to you. Because if you introduce that message in that book and you spoke about it and you become a um a representative for that, you become an advocate for that, you become, yeah, it it evolves into those kinds of things. So then after that, once you make that determination, so one, what type of business do you do enjoy working with? What kind of business do you want to create? And and building, you know, starts with the foundation, starts with the bottom, then starts with the walls, then starts, then you build all the other accessories. But don't come with the accessories first if you don't have the foundation built and the concrete poured. And then we have a firm foundation and the ground is is cleared and the trees are out of the way. You you gotta get some of the um, you know, the basics done first. And and we'll talk about that uh even more with systems. You gotta see it before you see it, you gotta have it in your mind, you gotta write it down on paper, you gotta be willing to connect with it and identify with it and work toward it. You may not have it now, but there's something you're working toward step by step. And you need to have people, I'd be happy to help you, but you need to be working with people that are gonna help you move that forward. You can do a lot on your own, but you can go a lot further and faster if you got some help. Okay? So analyze your book again. And then what problem were you trying to solve? What what solution? What problem were you trying? What was the problem? Then you'll know where to find those people who have that problem. So, what is the problem? So, what does the client need that you should have in your book to help them or in your toolkit or in your certifications or in your expertise to help them solve that problem? But what part of that solution do you want to offer? All the pieces, all the parts? Is it one-on-one? Is it only group? Is it only once a month? Is it only once a quarter? Do we have a fee schedule? What's the price point? When we gonna meet, how we gonna meet? Then those other things. They come later. But you gotta figure out what the problem is, and what does the client need and want, and how you're gonna solve that problem? And what parts of that can you quickly and easily solve, as opposed to trying to eat a whole elephant, and you know you can only do you know one little section of it. Because when my first client came to me and said, I want you to publish my book, she brought me, and I've stated it before, she brought me another poetry book like I had just published. If she had brought me a devotional, I could have done that too, because book two and three were devotionals. So for my start, it was poetry and publishing um devotionals. That's where I started. Now I said yes because it fit within that category. I couldn't branch out because I didn't know enough, I hadn't experienced enough, I hadn't written enough, and I hadn't been exposed to enough. So I had to learn. But for that, I can start right there. Start where you start. I still say it to this day. Start where you start. So there's some things that you have to ask yourself. You have to decide where you want to go from there. I'll be back next time with more. I'm Dr. Julia Russ, and I hope this has helped you. We're making that transition. So before I give you systems and you need that, and you need that, and you need that, we gotta decide. We got to start at the foundation. We gotta start at the beginning. What kind of business do you want? What does it look like? So until we meet again, I need you to be looking around, seeing what businesses you like, seeing what they have to offer. And then we'll move forward with more. Be blessed. Until next time, have a great day. Bye-bye.
