Welcome to the Book Business Boss Show with your host, Dr. Julia Royston, helping you get your message to the masses, turn your words into wealth, and be a book business boss.
SPEAKER_02Well, hello, I'm Dr. Julia Royston. Welcome to another episode of the Book Business Boss Show, where I'm always helping you get your message to the masses, turn your words into wealth, and be a book business boss. And take that book into a business. Well, this is the turning point episode. This is where uh we kind of do a review, but up until now, even before you actually put the shingle out and say, I'm in business to do X, Y, D, A, B, C, it's time for us to review. What have you been consistent at doing? Uh, by now, you should be uh your book is definitely available. You should be consistent in posting and using social media, you should be uh consistent in listening to potential clients, you should be uh consistently or at least periodically seeing any community events that are available, any online events that are related to what you want to do. Um, if you already work a job or you have a business already, great, we're gonna connect the two. We're gonna connect the book to the business. But if you're having, if you have a book and the book has been out, I don't know, six months, and all of a sudden, uh, do you coach? And you keep hearing that over and over again. I mean, is there a journal with this? Um, can you help me do A B C X Y? Would you come and speak? Would you come when those questions start coming up and people start asking those particular things and they're wanting more from you? That's just it. Bottom line. Um, you you haven't just written a book. You have sparked interest, you have answered a question partially because they want more. You have eased the pain point, you honed in something or problem that's actually going on. You've answered some of the questions, but they still have more questions. You've uh eased the pain point to a point that they say, aha, this is somebody who understands who I am and what I'm going through. But I still I'm at it, I'm probably at ABC for the book answered for me, but I need to get to Z, or I need to get to purpose, or I need to get, and you're the person that they want to invest in, they want to have more conversations with. Bottom line, they want you. And so therefore, I know people want to overnight success and yay, and and the phone was ringing. No. When I had my first client and I started my company, I launched my first book in 2007. 2008 is when BK Orrison Publishing was established. But 2009 is when I had my first client. I probably didn't have my next client until 2010, 2011. So, you know, publishing one book was a huge deal for me. People came, but they took a little longer before they decided. Well, first off, after 2009, I still was trying to figure out whether I was this was it or not for more people than just me. So therefore, there you have to give yourself grace. You have to give yourself time. Anything worth having, anything worth building is worth building it correctly. Something that goes up too fast, it'll fall down. Something that is not careful, you you know, yeah, you got a vision, and yes, you need to keep that vision. Yep, you're gonna have to encourage yourself. Yep, you're gonna have to see the vision when nobody else sees the vision. You're gonna have to get up early when nobody else is up early. You're gonna have to stay up late when nobody else is staying late. You're gonna have to be the person that helps set it up and take it down, whatever that looks like. But in the meantime, you still have to kind of go slow because otherwise, you will not be able to handle an influx. You just get more clientele and your systems are not in place. You get more clientele and you can't handle it. You'll still work a full-time job. The business isn't paying enough consistently for you to leave your nine to five job. So you've got to figure out what that looks like and what you can handle, what you can't handle, so what you cannot handle. So there's a lot of developing relationships, building relationships. I'm gonna tell you, most people's gonna sit there with their arms folded back and watch you and see some people be willing watching me for years. I'm like, are you just meeting me? Oh no, I've been watching you for years, and they're gonna keep on watching and keep on. I'll be done retired before they jump on in. And that's fine too. That's their choice. But that doesn't stop me from where I am, where I'm going, and where God's getting ready to take me. So developing relationships is really, really key. Positioning yourself as an expert, a consistent one. It's like going to medical school and and you're you're now you got a residency, you got all that stuff you gotta do. And then you become a doctor, and then three months later saying, you know, I've been through a lot of this, but I don't think I want to be a doctor anymore. Not that you practice five or ten years and no, you just right away decide I don't want to. So, baby, anything building uh that you're passionate about, really willing to sacrifice for, oh no, love. You're gonna you're gonna continue to to be involved in it. But you're positioning yourself as an expert. So an expert, doctor, lawyer, engineer, whatever, they're in it for a while. So I may not be the best at it, but I've been doing it now 18 years. Most businesses shut down after three. Now, believe you me, I'm in them 18 years, there's plenty of times I wanted to shut it down. But no, God said no, and so did Brian Morrison. So, therefore, positioning yourself as an expert is the long game. It's not short, and I jump in three months and then I jump. No, no, no. That's not what experts do. Experts have time in the game, and then you need to be able and be ready to start listening to, if you haven't before, listening to what the potential client wants as opposed to what you think they want. Give the people what they want because then hopefully they're willing to pay for it. But you've got to listen to what they want. You know, I I put out recently, okay, I normally have classes on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Well, you know, when you're holed up in the house in the wintertime, that works because you're not really, you know, not a lot of stuff is going on. Everybody's in the house. But when it gets closer to spring and it's closer to like March, and people are moving about the country. And so therefore, they're like, well, the Tuesdays, I got this, and the Saturdays, I'd love to come to class, but I got this on Saturday morning. And so I switched. I said, okay, well, let's try Thursday. And then, of course, responses came, but you know, I may have to move it around, and I have no problem moving around. I'm full time in this. I don't have any obligations where I have to be somewhere this day. I can move it around. I can base it on what you need as opposed to what I need, especially if you're paying me what day you want to meet. Okay, well, that's good. I can work that out, I can make that happen. I can switch something up. So, therefore, developing, building, maintaining relationships, positioning yourself as an expert, listening to your potential client. If you don't know, if you don't have a lot of clients, then ask people. So if I were to do X, Y, and Z, A, B, C, what would you need? Or if this were to happen, what would you be asking? That's what it's called an engagement post on social media. And then you get all these comments. Now they didn't buy nothing and they didn't commit to buy nothing, but you got a lot of information that you can use to help move you forward in um setting up and providing services for your business. You know, it's just like anything else. You once you do your research and your homework and you find out more what people want, then of course you you go build it. You go build that that the people want. And then you gotta promote it and you gotta uh pitch it and you gotta, yeah. So therefore, those three main things in this first pivotal is really uh what you need to really be doing all the time. When I was still teaching, I went live every morning on my way to school at seven between seven and seven thirty, sometimes between seven thirty and eight. I was mobile, I was sitting somewhere, I was driving. Sometimes they were short, but they could count on them. Oh, and one lady told me one time, oh, you're the one who records in her car. I knew it was a dig, but then on the other hand, after I got out, as they say, brushed, got out of my feelings and brushed myself off. I realized, yeah, Julia, she knows you're in your car, and she knows that you go live in your car because you watching. She knows she might even have it set on on notifications, huh? So don't get offended, just because she hasn't. That was early on when I'm like, why didn't you say nothing? Why didn't you comment something? Why didn't you share something? You just watching right, but it is now later. I know I don't be waiting. Oh, I'm waiting on people to join. Mm-mm. We just gonna start talking. You'll listen to the replay. You might be watching, but I'm not waiting on you. I have content to give and I'm ready to give it. Are you developing relationships? Are you positioning yourself as an expert? And are you listening to your potential client? I'm gonna take a break right here. I'll be back with more. That's Royston Royal Bookstore.com. And we're back. I'm Dr. Julia Royston, and this is the Book Business Boss Show, helping you get your message to the masses, turn your words into wealth, and be a book business boss. So um we're in the transitional period where we're getting ready to change lanes, change gears, and change direction a little bit. All the things that I've done the first uh few episodes and uh are viable and important and something that you definitely should be doing. But now we need to decide you know what type of business do we want to have. Because um, all right, so some people just help people write their books, they don't help them publish, they don't help them format or organize, they're considered a writing coach. Some people help people who have written the book and they're just an editor, they just review it and tell them what's wrong with it. Some of them are line editors that just tell them grammatically what's incorrect, some of them are developmental editors, they tell them this is how you make the story better. It lags in chapter four. That was good in chapter five, but oh, chapter six is boring. And go back and fix chapter one. Those are developmental editors, those are the ones that help you make the story or make the book more um interesting to keep the reader, as well as more marketable, so it can be profitable. So, therefore, there are all kinds of things in the literary market that can help. Or you're like me that can do a la carte, just pieces of the process, and hand the documents back to you, and you do the rest, or me who can do all of it. Okay. So, therefore, you've got to decide what you really want to do. So I started off, the game came to me, and I started off doing everything. But over time, I've had to pivot and shift gears because people are doing a lot of self-publishing on their own. They, you know, deciding they want to publish through other people. They they don't connect with me, they don't, and that's fine. And that that is just a part of doing business and part of life. But there are nine billion people on the planet nearly. So there's enough out there for all of us. And so my disclaimer that I want to put out there, first off, I'm not a financial consultant. I have a degree in accounting, but I've never really worked as a full-time accountant. So as far as financial advice, I'm not your girl. And so anything I say will be check with your CPA, check with your financial consultant. So we're really not talking about a business per se as how you should file, how you should establish yourself, or you're a uh S-corp, or should you be a corporation, LLC partnership. That's for the financial advisors to be. And your business status and all that, no, that's not what we're doing over here. We are either you have a business and you need a book to go along with it, or now hopefully you have the book already. But if you don't, go back to season one, the replays of the book businessboss podcast.com for season one and two for writing and publishing and promotion for season three. But also, if you have a book that is now developing into a business, how are we gonna set that up? How are we gonna move that and roll that? Okay, so as far as still trying to decide what type of business you want, you gotta determine what kind of person you are. You know, even though you wrote it down on paper, are you do you like people like that? Now, for me, it's it's innate, it's inside, it's down in me. Yeah, I do get tired after so long, and I need a nap, and I need it food, and I need a vacation and all those kinds of things, but naturally I'm okay with people. I really am. My personality, I'm an extrovert. What do they teach me? I'm an ambivert. So sometimes I need internal time and I don't want to talk no more. Sometimes I don't want to talk no more because I'm hoarse. I can't talk. You know, my voice gets overloaded when I do too much, and so therefore, I have to rest it. I have to relax it. Sometimes when I talk to my mother in the evening, she goes, go rest your voice. She done talked too much today. Yes, ma'am. And that's what I have to do. But you got to decide how much into people are you gonna be. Now, I'm gonna be honest with you. Technology can do a lot, automation can do a lot, but depending on the clientele you serve, they're gonna need you. Yeah, there may be some automated systems that you have, there may be some, you know, things that you have and the instant access courses and e-books you can get along and find out. But that next level, they're gonna want you. So you have to, you really have to sit down, have your own come to Jesus meeting, look in the mirror and decide, okay, what works for me, really, personality-wise. Because there's nothing worse than starting something and saying, I can do it, and you really don't even like people on that level. You can do a little bit and take, you know, an hour or two a week, or you it your your clientele would be have to be more exclusive because your tolerance for people and all of that is just not there. And that's something you have to decide. So turning that into a business, you may not have the money, but by the time people get through working with you, it won't sustain itself because either your personality doesn't work well with people. And you have to be honest with yourself as far as that's concerned. So, therefore, your ability to work with people and my ability to work with people is two different things. Okay. So you have to decide that and you got to figure that up, figure that out up top. So after you figure that out, yeah, I'm okay. Then you have to figure out your life. And I know you think, well, that's a little overwhelming and very daunting, but you do. How is your life set up? When would you even meet with people? When would you even connect with other folk? When is that? What does that look like for you? When would you have time for it? You would have to adjust your life for that. So there are certain things that you have to stop doing, no longer do to be able to even have a business. You know, um, so for example, when I first started, I was still leading worship, uh, part-time Sundays, having rehearsals on Thursdays, um, leading Bible study, um, worship before Bible study on Wednesdays, rehearsal on Thursdays, and then sometimes rehearsals on Saturdays, and sometimes I was leading worship at other places Saturday and Sunday. Well, if I still had that schedule now, when would I publish? When would I meet with clients? When would I do laundry? When would I eat dinner? When would I wash dishes? When would I? Yeah, you see where I'm getting to. You see where I'm going. So that's what I mean is look at how your life is made up. If you're gonna move into the business space and meeting with people space and all that, you're gonna have to adjust how you live and what you do. Now I say, this is me, do it on your own. Make those adjustments, tweaks on your own. So, you know, the last two years, three years of teaching, I didn't eat in the faculty dining room. I didn't eat with nobody else. I told them I love y'all, the people I ate with for years, for the first whatever, nine years with the last three, y'all know I got somewhere to be and I got something going on. So I'm eating in my room. During this 20 minutes of time that I got, yeah, that's all you teach us get ready to eat. 20 minutes of time, I want to be alone. I want to be planning. I want to be, it's my 20 minutes. I want to do it like I want to. I love all of y'all, but you know, that's the way this is. So therefore, I had to adjust my life. And just hanging out, hey girl, and no, I call and check on people. I do, I'm I'm not a great friend, Brian says, but I if something pops off, I'm with you. But my friends know I love them, but I'm busy because I've adjusted and and narrowed down my life to the life of being a business owner that I wanted. Yeah. So I had to tweak and adjust where I go. Now for me, I'm loyal. So there's some things I would never stop doing unless God took it from me. And that's exactly what he did. Changed my whole entire world. Leave your kindred, leave your kind, leave your people, leave your everything. And go to a place I will show you and do things that I want you to do. And you cannot necessarily even much as your parents love you, much as you love them, I'm going to take you some places they don't even have a reference, a point of reference to. It will be seemed foreign and unfamiliar even for them. And that's just the way it had to be. That's the way it was. And that's the way it is even until this day. People still can't figure out how to got there. And I was like, it's because God led me and because I obeyed and did what he said. Was it easy? No, no, no. Was it hard some days? Absolutely. Did I cry a lot? Absolutely. Because you like the familiar. You your ego likes the familiar. Being able to walk in and do certain things and know certain people and position yourselves in certain ways, it's enjoyable. It wasn't sinful, it was enjoyable, but it wasn't God's perfect plan for my life. So if you feel like you're being stretched, pulled, you know, people are falling off, and you like, well, wait a minute, I didn't do nothing to him. Like, where? I mean, that I can't know. That's the new that he's taking you to. So that's a part of being a business owner. There are just certain ways and certain uh things that you used to do. Things that I used to do, the old Pentecostal song said, I don't do no more. Places I used to go, I don't go nowhere. Now they would go, I don't go no more. Of course, they're talking about sinful. Oh no, I'm on the Lord's side, I'm not on the devil's side. This business thing has nothing to do with you doing anything sinful. It has everything to do that this requires a different you. This requires a different setup, a different makeup, a different time schedule. Totally different. And it will transform how you live. That's the reason why I said look at your life. People are like, what you mean, look at my life? I'm just look at your life, boo, because it will change it. I'm gonna stop right here. I've got more to say. Who you know, after 18 years, I got tons enough to say, but I'm gonna let that simmer so you have an opportunity to think about all those things. Have an opportunity to look at your calendar and look at your life so that you can change it, so you can adjust it, so you can tweak it. Say yes to some things, and no, I can't do that anymore. Until next time, I'm Dr. Julia Royston. This is the Book Business Boss Show. You be blessed. Bye-bye.

SPEAKER_02Being a business owner is not for the faint of heart. Easily discovered a one who quits at the slightest problem or issue. On the other hand, there is not a business owner, entrepreneur, nonprofit director, ministry leader, or author that has not wanted to pause, slow down, or even quit. It is human nature. But if you could just take one more step, if you could fix that one problem, if you could find a friend or a coach to talk to about the situation who can point you in the right direction or be the answer you need, you can keep moving. There are three things that I want this book to encourage you to do. Watch your mindset, make moves, and don't lose momentum. Mindset Moves Momentum by Julia A.
