SPEAKER_02Well, hello. Welcome to the Book Business Boss Show. I'm Dr. Julia Royston of BK Royston Publishing, Royal Media and Publishing, and the Book Business Moss Consulting, helping you get your message to the masters, turn your words into wealth, and be a book business boss. So marketing and promotion, we started talking about that last week. And that is big as far as I'm concerned. Something that I always talk about and always am about. And people are like, I'm not you, Julian. I can't know, boo. You got something to sell? You go, I'm gonna turn you into uh marketing and promotion. I gotta turn you into it. Because people are not gonna necessarily just find you by osmosis. You got to lead them somewhere, you gotta get them there. And so, therefore, that's one of the essential things after having a product, after developing a service, you got to push it. So remember, we said um marketing was about all the things of getting something to market. Uh, and then the promotion is the push. That's what I'm gonna call. Um, because everything that I do seeks to my personality, be showing up, saying hi, hello, to be memorable, good morning, how are you? It's all a part of the push. Uh, I was at a school visit not too long ago, and um the person who invited me, you know, moved me from because we were meeting in the library, they had a continental breakfast in there, which was nice. And um the coordinator comes up to me and she said, you know, Julia, the office just said, who was that that just left out of here? Her personality is just always over the top. She said, Oh, this is her second home. She she hangs out here. She's a visitor with us a lot. And that's good to know that I had that impact on people by just saying hello. That's all I said. I wasn't in nobody's business. I just said hello. But I want to be memorable so that you can connect with anything else I do. Like, what do you do? Let's have a conversation to figure out what I do. And so it just makes a difference when you um are over the top and and you know, in what you do, you're passionate about what you're doing. And with that passion and with that love of it, you may have to sacrifice a little bit about your comfort zone. Comfort zone may have to go for a little bit when we're talking about being in the book business. We're in business or moving your book, turning your book into a business. Some of that, oh, I don't really do that. Oh, I don't, no, you gotta learn how to do it. And even if you stumble and kind of fumble around with it, but eventually you got to get it down to a science. The more you do it, the better you're gonna get. And so with that push, um, first off, we always have to take a step back and determine what's in our hands. What's the inventory? What do we have going on? What do we have? What's in your hands? Okay, is it just a product? Is there a service that goes along with it? Um, do you have a platform? Are you building a platform? Are you on social media consistently? Um, do you interview? Um, do you uh want to be interviewed? What's the what what you got? What what are you trying to push? Um, so first off, what's the book? What's the message of the book? What is the intent? Who is the intent for? What's the result? You intend to reach out to these people for one thing, but you may end up reaching out to people for something else. So um, is there a book? Is there a journal or a workbook that goes along with it? Especially for those um therapists and counselors, etc. Is there something for the person to work through? You outline everything, the 12 steps and the five pillars and the seven whatevers. But um is there a journal or their workbook for them to work through the process? You've told them now they've got to apply it and execute it for themselves. So what you got? Uh does your product have a coaching uh session with it? Does it have a um consultant service where you can do it for them or they can learn how to do it on their own? Is there a class that's coming up? Are you doing a six-week course that goes along with it? Is it a mini course that you get down each pillar in a mini course and follow up and reach out? And so what you got? What's your in for? Because this is really key in marketing and promotions, period. Whether you're being interviewed, whether you're just at an event selling something, you're uh virtual, you're it doesn't matter. You're just meeting somebody, you always got to be running around in your head. What do I have in my hands? What do I have to offer? What should I be pushing? What how do I connect this conversation to something that I have to offer? That's what's rolling around in my brain all the time. Who am I talking to? What do I need to do? And sometimes that's a go fast, and sometimes it's pull back and go slow. They only can handle this much, and that happens over time. You learn that you learn what works in certain settings with certain people, and you know, it it just is what it is. So, first off, my homework to you. What's in your hands? What you working with? I don't care if it's just one book. So let's let's just break it down. So if it's a poetry book and you write poetry, what is the experience they should have with your poetry? What are you pushing them to be able to connect with your poetry? Now, me, as far as I'm making sure that my audience, especially with poetry, is as broad as possible, is having it read, recording it. At least having five of the poems as an audiobook. Yeah. So that people can listen to it as well as read it on the page, as well as read it in their in their e-reader, Kindle, Note, etc. Okay, so that's three avenues for one product, three formats for one product. And if you have it in hardback, that's four. But that you need to have multiple ways, because all that did is expand your audience. Some people only want the print, some people only want the audio recordings, some people only want um the ebook recording. Some people only want the hardback. I'm telling you. There are some people who only want hardback books. Then there's also people that want five a video of you performing it. So you're reading it. So you set up your camcorder, go on, open up Zoom, and then go. And they see you read your poetry. Yeah. So that's poetry. Oh no, I don't deal with poetry. I only like, and I had a lady who said this, I only like poetry when it's read to me. Oh, here's the the CD. It's available for $10. She had nothing to do but get her $10 out because I provided in a format. I also have a one-room and show for poetry. It was then on video and DVD. But, you know, I've just given myself an idea. I may need to take some time to uh uh read a couple poems, especially for poetry month, read a couple poems with my book in my hand. What am I pushing? I got my book in my hand so you can see the book that I'm reading from, purchase it, know where to get it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We'll be talking about that in a little bit. So, what's in your hands? So, what's in your hands if it is a children's book? Um, the children that I meet, I don't care what nationality, ethnicity they are, they always come away with your books are so positive. I mean, you know, like, yes, yes, ma'am, yes, sir. That's what I want. I want you to have a positive outlook. I want you to be able to see yourself. Our representation matters. Um, and it doesn't have to be just black or white children, but I want Spanish children to see themselves. I want um the child that's in a wheelchair to see themselves, the autistic child to see themselves. I want the overweight, chubby child like me with round glasses. I want them to be seen too as well. I want the child who has long ponytails and flaming red hair who's biracial to see themselves. Okay. So therefore, I have multiple themes. I have multiple reasons for the children's books. But at the end of the day, I want you to come in away. One, you had a good story, but I want you to see yourself. I want you to know that there is um somebody else out there that, you know, writes to as well. I want you to think that writing is cool. I want you to know that writing can be profitable. I was at a school visit and the teacher said, you know, um, those of you, I said, those of you who circle and find other people's mistakes when you exchange papers with your neighbor and review what they've written, there's a job for you. There's a great need for you in the world as an editor, as a reviewer. So those kinds of things, that's career-oriented. That's oh yeah. It's multiple reasons and multiple ways. Multiple things, multiple outlets that I have for you. What's in my hands? A lot's in my hands. What am I pushing? A lot. And more than any anything, I really want to um push a positive, affirming, enlightening, informative experience. One that helps answer some of your questions, um, solves a problem, and meets a need that you have. We'll take a break right here. We'll be back with more. Social media is not the only promotional outlet and platform to market and promote your message, events, products, and services, but it is a great one because of the potential reach and eyes that can lead to sales. As authors and business owners, we want to write, create, and get drafts of our creations to publish and market. As a business owner, we want to write, we want to produce, we want to get our products as quickly to market as possible. With all of that, we've written, produced, uh, mass produced, and published, if no one knows about it, why you wrote it, why you made it, and how they can benefit from it, it does not fulfill its full potential and purpose for the market reader or customer. Writing is important, the product is important, where you publish it, where people can buy it, is the next level of importance. But without social media and promotion or the push, it lies dormant. Let's find out how we can utilize social media. Social media for authors and business owners by Julia A. Royston is available now for the book and the course at julia roystonstore.com. That's julia roystonstore.com. And we're back. So we're talking about marketing and promotion, the push. And today we're focusing on that push with inventory. What's in your hands? I'm Dr. Julia Royston. You're looking to listening to the and we're back, uh, fix. And we're back. You're listening to the book business boss show. I'm Dr. Julia Royston, your host, and we're talking about marketing and promotion. Push what. Um, and today specifically, we're talking about the inventory. What's in your hands, taking inventory. I hope you start jotting down some things that are in your hands. Uh and even more importantly, what the results, what the benefit of what's in your hands should be. Whatever's in your hands, make sure that it's beneficial to the reader, the client, the customer. That's the benefit and the main reason. We want to be profitable is the end goal. But if it doesn't benefit anybody, if it doesn't help anybody, if it doesn't serve anybody, they're not going to buy it. If it's not something that somebody needs or wants, and if we haven't taken the time to be able to find that person and what they need and want, then it's going to be a moot point. Business is going to close. People are not going to buy it. If they don't know about it, if you haven't pushed anybody there to it, that's not going to help anybody either. I recently um was working with a client and I've got to do better about this because I didn't think about it. I've been talking about it, but I didn't think about it really to follow up with them. And I realized they're getting ready to do a book release, and I'm getting ready to um do a um, they're doing a book signing for the book, and they haven't posted on social media for two or three years. I'm like, oh my lord, you didn't post. Is it really true you haven't posted since 2020, whatever? And they were like, oh, I was like, oh, wow. Okay, so that push thing, you know, being consistent, we'll talk about social media a little bit more um in the future. But I'm like, oh no, that okay, we're gonna it it taught me something, and it's gonna teach them something, but it's really gonna teach me something because that's something that I need to include. That's the that's something I need to, you know, have out there actively. I'm working on it, believe you me, because I realize, oh wow, okay. So um that push part needs to be consistent, you know, over time of who you are, what you have to offer. Happy birthday, Merry Christmas, uh, happy Thanksgiving. Oh my gosh, it's summer. What you doing at the beach? Oh, I'm getting a pedicure. Oh, it's got all about to be relational because you just can't push that one time and now I've got something to offer and I only want you to buy it, but I don't want to talk to you no other time. How's that gonna work? Number two, after we determine what's in our hands, number two, do we have any kind of communication, monthly communication? Are we at that level where we really want to get people off of social media? Um, because I've talked a little bit about social media, and but it needs to be a vicious cycle, and I'll talk about that in a minute. But do we are we thinking about, even if we do something on a quarterly basis to send out a communication? Because you've had a book signing, there should be a list of people there, um, people that have bought your book, not only just at the book signing, but at other events after that. Yeah. What happens after that? Yeah. So what's in your hand? So it's all about the push, but the push is happening all the time. And the push should be a part of, as they say, at this juncture, if you are really serious about turning your book into a business, it's all about you every time we meet you. It should just exude from your pores and who you are. It should be connected to you. That's where your personal and business brand connect, and they're all one and the same. So that when Julia Royston shows up, I don't have to say I have a book. They're like, oh, there's the book boss. Oh, there's a book lady. And I didn't say nothing, but hey, how y'all doing? That's it. But they connect with my brand so much because I do push so much that it's it's easy. And I just laugh and I say, I sure am. I identify with that remark. And thank you very much. What's going on? How y'all doing? I don't say, did you buy my latest? No, I don't do that. Because if you you you saw me, you seen me enough to know that I'm putting out something else, I'm pushing something else. But you might not be the audience for what I'm pushing. You may not be the person for what I'm I'm doing. So I'll let you come to me and tell me, you know, I was thinking about writing that book. Baby, here's my card. I'm ready where you are. So therefore, do you have any communication at all? Do you go live at all? Yeah. And then, of course, social media. That's what I've been talking about. Social media, the push, or whatever. But not only the push there, but get them off of social media. You get yeah, get them off social media as much as possible. And then having interviews, podcasts, interviews, etc. Having the ability for people to meet you even more, meet you even further. Um, just hint-hint, I have a interview course that's available at Joy Rosen's store, uh providing interview tips. Um, I'm finding that authors are have a great opportunity, but they're terrible at it. And uh I'll probably have a part two as well, but I recently had had an author that was who had great experience and has written multiple books, but they don't interview very well. And so therefore, I said, oop, I need to, you know, when I see a problem, I need to try to help somebody solve it. And so um that's kind of that's kind of where that's been and where I'm going with that is that, you know, how many, I gotta help, baby, I gotta help you solve that problem. So having interviews uh on other people's platforms, other people's podcasts need to be memorable. It doesn't guarantee book sales, but it needs to be memorable. I have access to a very large platform that has a lot of people viewing it, etc. And I need to be able to pick people quickly that I know interview well, not just I have to have a new book out because I always interview authors first. And when I interview them first, then I can tell, oh yeah, that would be great on them. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. But that doesn't always uh translate to a good interview and showing them in the best light. And so I've got to offer some tools, I gotta offer some tips. I do have another course. Oh yeah, I got plenty of information for you. Are you media ready? It's available at juliaworks in the store.com as well. Oh, yeah, I got I got outlets, I got stuff for you to be able to help you to be your best self because as you push, it needs to be in the best light. Now that comes over time, comes with practice, practice. And did I say practice? Practice. The more you do it, the better you'll be. The more you have an opportunity, the better you'll be. But sometimes you get better with your own private practice in front of the mirror. Um, saying five questions to your spouse or to your girlfriend. Come on. Um help me practice, help me get better, give me suggestions on what I should do. Watching interviews on TV. They got plenty of talk show hosts where you can see them in motion. And what did the person respond? What did they say? Now, I know they have a whole media team and they've pre-done the questions, but there are certain things that an author should, you know, have in their, as they say, bag of tricks or in the interview bag all the time. What's the book about? What made you write it? How long did it take you? What are your writing techniques? Are you up in the morning? Do you stay up late? How can we find it? How can we buy it? What's coming up next? Those are the those are just right off the top of my head because I've been interviewing people now. It'd be six years. No, I guess that'll be seven years in November or 2026 that I have been actively weekly interviewing or going live weekly six years for um Sunday morning with Julia Royston, seven years of live your best life. Uh, what is it? Five years of book business, boss show. I mean, yeah, I've been doing it a lot. So therefore, those things roll right off the top of my head. They're in my head because people have interviewed me and asked me things, and I've interviewed others. So, therefore, you know, having that push, it's a vicious cycle. It goes from what's new in your hands to here, I'm communicating to my own audience. Oh, here's I'm pushing to social media. Oh, I'm interviewing, I'm talking about it, I'm doing yeah. All of those pieces, all those parts. I hope that helps you. Pushing what? What's in your hands? What you got in your inventory? What's your message? Who you want to move? What problem do you solve? And what question are you answering? I'm Dr. Julia Royston. I hope that helped you. Until next time, be blessed. Have a great day. Bye-bye.
